From small beginnings in Ballymena, Co Antrim in 1993, Blaney Group has managed to beat the trend and prove that local design, innovation, and manufacturing have the ability to compete with international players. Now Blaney are taking the next step in business growth to become a significant employer in the local community through its engineering based divisions including Quad-X, Blaney Agri, Blaney Gears and the launch of Blaney Motor.
As the first quad bike manufacturer in Europe, the experience Blaney gained in designing and building their own off-highway vehicle provided them with valuable insights that some other manufacturers lack. They practically invented the commercialisation of ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles), with the vast range of Quad-X attachments that supercharged the potential of these often overlooked vehicles. During development of these attachments they made several technological innovations, including learning how to get more power from a smaller machine. These innovations helped greatly when their operations scaled up to produce larger tractor machinery enabling Blaney Agri to produce high performance affordable products in a highly competitive marketplace. Blaney’s acquisition of a highly experienced gear manufacturing plant in 2011 created the Blaney Gears division and further added to the group’s manufacturing capabilities and engineering expertise.
With all the synergies in place, and years of investment in R&D since 2004, Blaney are now ready to bring a focus back to Blaney Motor, to market a range of multipurpose compact vehicles for the agricultural and construction industry. The launch of new product concepts at Balmoral Show forms part of the journey towards the creation of a significant number of jobs over the next few years. Plans were in place to launch these unique off-road vehicles in 18 months’ time, but given the looming closures of significant manufacturing plants in Ballymena and the negative impact this will have on the local economy Blaney are pleased to share their outlook for significant manufacturing growth and to bring forward employment opportunities sooner rather than later.
As an export focused business, Blaney want to continue to innovate and create great new products. These exciting new product concepts are a natural progression from Blaney’s background in off highway vehicle design and agricultural attachments. Gillian Bonnar, Export Sales Officer tells us, “We have identified a gap in the market both at home and overseas and following over a decade’s extensive research we are pleased to announce the launch of Blaney Motor and new vehicle concepts at this year’s Balmoral Show. Come along and see the machines for yourselves and register for upcoming demonstration events.”
The new multipurpose machines are specifically designed to be compact for manoeuvrability and mobility. Their size allows them to access hard to reach areas while their weight allows them to be transported under 3.5 ton. So if you’re involved in farming, plant hire, construction, equestrian, landscaping, amenities, road works or self-build, this could be the next thing on your wish list.
Blaney are invested in the future of home-grown engineering in Northern Ireland. Sean Blaney, owner and chief engineer has been the key driver behind the Blaney vision. “I have always had a great belief in our capabilities even from those early days when I set up the business with my student loan while at university. I have always wanted to show the world what the people of Northern Ireland can do. We want to grow the local manufacturing industry and create sustainable capabilities for the long term and this next step has the potential to create substantial employment opportunities over the next few years.”
Sean Blaney is delighted to launch Blaney Motor’s new vehicle concepts at Balmoral Show and says, “I am excited to meet the new customers, partners and employees who will make this journey with us. We are committed to building a legacy of quality engineering that will benefit our investors, suppliers, employees, dealers, local economy and most importantly our customers.”
