Production-ready electric tractor revealed
French agricultural technology start-up Seederal has revealed the first images and technical details of its purpose-built electric tractor, marking a significant milestone in its ambition to bring zero-emission power to the heart of the European tractor market.
Unlike many electric tractor projects based on converted diesel machines, the Seederal tractor has been engineered from the ground up as a battery-electric vehicle. The company says the clean-sheet design has enabled it to rethink the entire architecture, maximising efficiency, reducing maintenance requirements and eliminating the need for a conventional gearbox.
The Brittany-based manufacturer is targeting the important 100-200hp sector with a tractor delivering around 160hp, a segment that accounts for more than half of all new tractor sales across Europe. The machine has been designed to provide enough energy for a full day’s work while offering rapid charging capabilities and significantly lower operating costs than an equivalent diesel-powered tractor.
Seederal says its engineers have focused on integrating the battery pack into the tractor’s structure rather than simply replacing the engine with electric motors. This “native electric” architecture improves weight distribution, increases efficiency and allows the machine to retain the robustness expected for demanding agricultural applications. The absence of a traditional transmission also reduces the number of moving parts, potentially lowering servicing costs and improving long-term reliability.
The tractor has already undergone more than 600 hours of field testing with input from over 100 farmers, allowing engineers to refine the design before production. According to Seederal, the latest prototype represents the first fully in-house version of the machine, with production-oriented engineering replacing the earlier demonstrator based on a converted JCB Fastrac.
The company has also strengthened its industrial credentials through a strategic partnership with Italian driveline specialist Carraro, which is supplying key transmission and axle technologies specifically developed for the electric platform. The collaboration aims to combine Seederal’s electric powertrain expertise with Carraro’s experience in agricultural driveline engineering.
Backed by more than €10 million in private investment and French government support, Seederal plans to begin commercial production following completion of the current prototype programme. Beyond simply replacing diesel engines, the company sees electric tractors as part of a wider on-farm energy ecosystem, with future machines capable of acting as mobile energy storage units when not working in the field.
While electric tractors remain a niche in mainstream agriculture, Seederal’s latest unveiling demonstrates how the sector is moving beyond compact utility machines towards full-size field tractors capable of handling everyday farming operations. As manufacturers across Europe seek practical routes to decarbonising agricultural machinery, the French start-up is positioning itself as one of the most ambitious new entrants in the market.
