Slurry separation on show

Slurry handling specialist, Vogelsang, is putting on a slurry separation demonstration day at Myerscough College Livestock Innovation Centre. The free event will take place on 22nd July from 10am until 2pm.

“Myerscough College is the perfect venue to demonstrate the Vogelsang XSplit separator. For this demonstration we will have both the standard XSplit Lift Frame Pro and the XSplit Compact,” says Vogelsang’s Andy Hayhurst.

Separator grants have increased interest and demand from those looking to reduce the burden on storage without making larger investments in new slurry stores. Separation also appeals for those looking to apply slurry more accurately and efficiently because the liquid faction is easier and cheaper to pump.

“Separators offer an affordable way to make better use of slurry. The liquid fraction is rich in nitrogen, and, using soil and slurry testing along with variable rate application, operators can ensure the right amount of nutrients are applied when the soil and crop need them. For anyone who has applied for an FETF grant, the demo day will be a great opportunity to see how they could benefit from their investment,” says Mr Hayhurst.

The solid fraction generated from separation is also a useful source of P and K, making it well suited for use as a top dressing. Mr Hayhurst suggests that some farms go a step further and make use of the solid as a green bedding material which can, in some cases, save farms thousands of pounds a year.

“This demonstration is designed to show how to get the most out of separation, regardless of the farm system. For many, separation is just a way to reduce the amount of slurry being stored. However, we have worked with farms that have benefited from the full potential of separation by saving time and money on bedding, inputs and application,” concludes Mr Hayhurst.
